Wednesday 2nd July 2014 – 4.15pm – Murray MacGregor.
An ambulance crew who helped a mother who had just given birth in a busy Birmingham City Centre street have been speaking about the cheers that the first sight of the baby brought.
The unusual birth happened outside Primark in New Street at about 1.55pm on Tuesday afternoon.
The woman was initially helped by a doctor who was passing the scene. The baby was born within seconds of the doctor’s arrival.
A rapid response vehicle was on scene within six minutes of the call and was backed up by two ambulances who arrived a few minutes later.
Paramedics Jonathan Eades and Kirsty Wilcox helped the other ambulance staff to cut the chord and make sure mother and baby were fine before taking them to City Hospital.
Kirsty said: “Mum was very embarrassed by what had happened but local shop staff held up blankets to give her some privacy.
“A few people did give her some money and she was presented with a bunch of flowers but she was understandably most interested in the health of her new daughter.”
Jonathan added: “There was quite a cheer when I lifted the baby up to take her to the ambulance. Mum was doing really well all things considered.”
