A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a man who had suffered serious smoke inhalation and also burns to his arm and the top of his head.

“The man, believed to be in his early 80’s, received emergency treatment at the scene by paramedics and his condition was stabilised. He was then transferred by ambulance to Heartlands Hospital for further emergency treatment. Unfortunately the man’s injuries were very serious.
