Motorcyclist trapped underneath car following Bedworth collision

Thursday 21st May 2015 – 5.45pm – Claire Brown.

A man has suffered serious injuries after a collision with a car which left him trapped beneath the vehicle in Bedworth.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Bowling Green Lane near to a primary school shortly before 4.00pm this afternoon (Thursday). An ambulance, a paramedic area support officer, a critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When ambulance staff arrived they found an off duty nurse administering excellent first aid to the motorcyclist who, in the impact, had ended up trapped beneath the car along with his motorbike.

“The man was very pale and had a reduced level of consciousness upon first assessment by ambulance staff. Working closely with the fire service, who used airbags to lift up the car and stabilise the vehicle, ambulance staff extricated him from beneath the car to carry out a full assessment and start emergency treatment.

“The man had sustained a suspected head injury and multiple fractures to his limbs. He was given advanced drug therapy, including a specialist clotting drug to reduce blood loss, to help stabilise his condition and make him more comfortable. Ambulance staff used a scoop stretcher, neck collar and pelvic splint to immobilise the man before he was transferred to the awaiting helicopter for transport to nearby University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire; a flight time of approximately two minutes.”

Steve Hargreaves, Paramedic Area Support Officer, said: “Parents and passers-by were really helpful by ensuring the scene was cleared quickly of children to avoid any upset. A big thank you to the off duty nurse who had stopped to help and was giving excellent first aid to the gentleman. It is always a welcomed sight to see a patient being cared for when we arrive on scene.”

The road remains closed by the police.
