Boy dies & three people injured in Staffordshire RTC

Thursday 16th August 2018 – 5.30pm – Claire Brown.

One boy has died and a second has been airlifted to hospital following a serious road traffic collision in North Staffordshire this afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received several 999 calls to reports of a collision involving a car and a van with one patient reported to be in cardiac arrest on the Uttoxeter Road in Draycott in the Clay, near Uttoxeter at around 12.45pm today (Thursday). Three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, two paramedic officers, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance with a doctor on board and a second BASICS doctor responded to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived to find a serious road traffic collision involving a car and a van with a total of four patients involved; a driver and two passengers from the car and the van driver.

“A young boy from the car was in cardiac arrest and was already being given bystander CPR. Ambulance staff and the doctors worked as a team to deliver advanced trauma care to him at the scene. He was quickly transferred by land ambulance on blue lights to nearby Royal Stoke University Hospital; a doctor travelled in the ambulance with the crew to continue resuscitation en route.  Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone at the scene and in A&E, nothing could be done to save the boy and he was confirmed dead a short time later.

“Crews assessed the second car passenger, a young boy, and due to his condition and the severity of the collision he was immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic binder before being airlifted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for further specialist care.

“The car driver, a woman in her 20s, sustained multiple injuries and received pain relief to help stabilise her condition before being fully immobilised and taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

“A man in his 40s, the driver of the van, was out of the vehicle when crews arrived and was found to have suffered leg, hip and arm pain. He was given pain relief before being fully immobilised as a precaution and conveyed by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital.”
