Our environmental goals
Our Green Plan is centred on achieving the following key environmental goals:
- Reduce carbon emissions: Minimise our carbon footprint through energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and sustainable transport options.
- Conserve resources: Implement practices that reduce waste, conserve water, and promote recycling and reuse.
- Promote sustainable procurement: Source eco-friendly products and services, prioritising suppliers who demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.
- Enhance biodiversity: Protect and enhance green spaces on our premises, supporting local wildlife and promoting biodiversity.
- Engage and educate: Raise awareness and engage our staff, patients, and community in sustainability initiatives and practices.
Key initiatives
To achieve our environmental goals, we have implemented a range of key initiatives across the Trust:
Energy efficiency
- Energy audits: Conduct regular energy audits to identify and implement energy-saving measures.
- LED lighting: Replace conventional lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting throughout our facilities.
- Building management systems: Utilise advanced building management systems to optimise heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) operations.
Renewable energy
- Solar panels: Install solar panels on our buildings to generate clean, renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Green energy procurement: Purchase electricity from renewable sources and explore opportunities for on-site renewable energy generation.
Sustainable transport
- Electric vehicle charging: Provide electric vehicle charging points for staff and visitors to encourage the use of electric vehicles.
- Green travel plans: Promote sustainable travel options, such as cycling, public transport, and car-sharing schemes, for staff and patients.
Waste reduction and recycling
- Comprehensive recycling programmes: Implement comprehensive recycling programmes for paper, plastics, glass, and medical waste.
- Waste reduction initiatives: Introduce initiatives to reduce single-use plastics and promote the use of reusable alternatives.
- Composting: Establish composting facilities for organic waste, supporting our green spaces and reducing landfill waste.
Water conservation
- Water-efficient fixtures: Install water-efficient fixtures and fittings, such as low-flow taps and toilets, to reduce water consumption.
- Rainwater harvesting: Implement rainwater harvesting systems to collect and reuse rainwater for irrigation and non-potable uses.
Biodiversity and green spaces
- Green spaces: Maintain and enhance green spaces across our sites, providing a pleasant environment for patients, staff, and wildlife.
- Biodiversity projects: Support biodiversity projects, such as planting native species and creating habitats for local wildlife.
Community engagement and education
- Sustainability awareness campaigns: Run awareness campaigns to educate staff, patients, and the community about sustainability practices.
- Staff training: Provide training for staff on sustainability topics, encouraging environmentally friendly practices in the workplace.
Monitoring and reporting
We are committed to transparency and accountability in our sustainability efforts. We regularly monitor our progress and report on our environmental performance, setting targets and identifying areas for improvement.
