West Midlands Ambulance Service responded to several weather-related incidents across the Region as Storm Darragh swept across the country at the weekend.
Birmingham
- We received multiple calls to reports of a tree which had fallen onto a car on Sutton Road in Erdington at 3.13pm on Saturday. An ambulance and two paramedic officers were sent to the scene arriving within seven minutes of the call being made. Tragically, nothing could be done to save the driver of the car, a man, and he was confirmed dead on scene.
- At 3.29pm on Saturday West Midlands Ambulance Service received multiple 999 calls to High Street in Kings Heath after reports a shop window had blown out and hit a pedestrian. Two ambulances attended and assessed a woman who had sustained potentially serious injuries in the incident. She was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham for further trauma care.
- Two ambulances and a paramedic officer responded to Lode Lane in Solihull after a 999 call at 3.41pm on Saturday reporting a tree had fallen onto two cars. Two patients were assessed by ambulance staff. One patient was discharged on scene and one man was conveyed to Heartlands Hospital for further checks.
Warwickshire
- An ambulance, paramedic officer and a critical care car from The Air Ambulance Service responded to a man who had been injured by a fallen tree in a garden on Myton Road, Warwick on Saturday at 12.42pm. He was conveyed to University Hospital Coventry Warwickshire with potentially serious injuries.
- Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a local community first responder and a critical care car from The Air Ambulance Service were sent to Portland Place West in Leamington Spa after several 999 calls at 4.55pm on Saturday reported three pedestrians were trapped under a large fallen tree. Crews arrived to find a woman and child who had self-extricated from beneath the tree and were being cared for by bystanders. They were assessed and found with minor injuries. Both were conveyed to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire as a precaution. Fire and ambulance colleagues worked quickly to extricate a man who was trapped underneath the tree. He was in a critical condition with serious injuries and received advanced trauma care on scene before being conveyed to the same hospital for further emergency care.
- At 6.20pm on Saturday an ambulance responding to a 999 call was hit by a falling branch in Welford on Avon which caused their windscreen to crack. Thankfully the crew were uninjured. A second ambulance was assigned to the 999 call whilst the crew returned to base to swap vehicles.
Worcestershire
- A man was blue lighted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance crews after being seriously injured by a falling tree on Bridgnorth Road in Bewdley. WMAS received a call at 6.20pm on Saturday and responded two ambulances, two paramedic officer and a BASICS doctor to the scene where the administered advanced trauma care to the man before conveying him to hospital for further emergency care.
