Acts of courage, bravery and heroism were celebrated by West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) yesterday (Thursday) at the Trust’s annual awards ceremonies.

The Staff Long Service & Excellence Awards and Excellence in the Community Awards were held at The Copthorne Hotel in Brierley Hill with more than 300 guests attending each ceremony. Guests included the Deputy-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Richard Boot OBE, and the High Sheriff of the County of West Midlands, David Moorcroft OBE.

This year, 19 members of staff were recognised for having given 20 years of service to WMAS, 9 staff were commended for 25 years’ service, four received certificates for 30 years’ service and one member of staff were honoured for 35 years in the Trust. Other awards to be handed out included Chief Officer Commendations, Student Paramedic of the Year, Mentor Awards, Apprenticeship Awards, Community Initiative and Partnership Awards; St John Ambulance Awards; CFR Long Service Awards and the CFR of the Year.

Trust Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh, said: “To have the chance to recognise the extraordinary efforts of our staff, volunteers and members of the public is extremely important.

“Throughout the awards ceremonies we heard many fantastic stories of people going above and beyond what is normally expected of them, all for the same reason, to provide the very best levels of care to our patients.

“I would like to say a big thank you and well done to all of our award winners, I am incredibly proud of all of them.”

Deputy-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Richard Boot OBE, said: “It is an honour and privilege to be invited to events of this nature and to see the fantastic work done by ambulance staff and volunteers. It is reassuring that there are people such as these who do so many incredible things to keep us all safe. Without their dedication and resolve, the public would be much worse off.”

High Sheriff of the County of West Midlands, David Moorcroft OBE, said: “Everyone at the awards ceremonies should feel such pride for what they do every day. They have to do uncomfortable things, but they never let it bother them because their aim is to save lives and turn tragedies into stories of recovery. It is an honour to be with them and I commend them all for what they do.

Prof Ian Cumming, WMAS Chairman, said: “It is important we recognise our staff, volunteers and members of the community because they all do remarkable things, day in, day out, despite the NHS facing some of the toughest challenges every seen. I send a huge and heartfelt thank you to them all for everything they do.”

Selected Award Winners and Citations

WMAS Outstanding Student Paramedic of the Year – Craig Winter (based at Warwick Hub)

This year’s winner has always gone above and beyond throughout his student paramedic journey, not just for his patients but also in his clinical ability and professional development.

Always demonstrating best practice for his patients, our winner is described by his nominee as ‘one of the most dynamic and quick-thinking staff members I have had the pleasure of working with. Someone who always gives 100% to patient care and by working with him, you can see why he is popular with colleagues and his patients. He can have good clinical discussions whilst remaining critical and constructive and demonstrates the Trust’s values better than anyone I have worked with’.

Our winner passed his paramedic degree with a distinction, is enthusiastic, spoken very highly of by his peers and now a paramedic at Warwick Hub, seems set for a long and successful career.

Patient Transport Service Mentor of the Year – Kiron Bhamra (based in Stafford)

Our inaugural winner of this award is someone who is always willing to support all new starters into the non-emergency operations centre, help guide them through their initial training programme and allocate desks and the appropriate staff, to facilitate training and oversee final sign off.

Described as a role model for the team, our winner constantly supports the team at Tollgate, ensuring everyone is up to date with any new policies and procedures to ensure compliance, as well as updating on any changes that are made.

She actively encourages learning within the team and will support time away from their roles to enable them to fulfil training dates required with the team at Tollgate having all been given the opportunity to do internal courses appropriate to their role, such as Engaging Managers and external courses such as NVQ’s in Mental Health.

Integrated and Emergency Urgent Care Mentor of the Year – Lyndsey Parkes (based in Brierley Hill)

A call assessor for longer than five years, our IEUC Mentor of the Year took on the responsibility at the start of the pandemic of mentoring new 999 call assessors, something she did for a number of months, being flexible, accommodating and overall very supportive to the new staff and training team.
She was always someone that the team could call on for help, with new and old staff for support, and has never turned down a request for help.
Most recently during the new recruitment to IEUC, our winner has again stood up to support all of the new staff.  She actively maintains contact with the team on her availability and flexibility to support new starters and the feedback received from staff is that the support she gives is fantastic, helping to build confidence with the feedback and guidance she offers.

Mentor of the Year – Emma Baxter (based at Hollymoor)

Our mentor of the year was nominated by one of her students, who tells the story of why she is a deserving winner perfectly.

‘I first approached Emma Baxter knowing that she would be open, critical and honest in her feedback of me, both clinically and personally. I needed help as I was aware I was struggling with being new into the role and taking a little longer than my peers to feel competent and confident. Emma facilitated the help I needed, helped me believe in myself, allowed me to lead and attend all jobs within my scope of practice to gain confidence and always give appropriate constructive feedback after a job.

Emma is extremely approachable, only ever a message away if I feel that I have had a bad clinical shift or wish to clarify a clinical point. She has always been proactive and supportive with me regarding my portfolio, actively helping me find competencies to get signed, as well as discussing questions related with the competences.

Emma deserves this award due to her dedication she has shown me and others throughout my AAP placement. She is an extremely knowledgeable mentor and an asset to Hollymoor Hub. Quite simply, without her, I would not be in the position, nor the clinician, I am today.’

Diversity and Inclusion Award – Ash Deakins (based at Dudley and pictured below)

This year’s winner has a genuine interest in people and their inclusion, supporting staff both locally and nationally to embrace diversity and ensuring a platform is provided for staff to feel included within their ambulance hub.

Described by many as a role model, our winner goes above and beyond to promote fairness in the workplace, promote a harmonious workplace that is an environment for everyone to be happy in their work and represents the Trust nationally, including within the National LGBTQ+ Network.

The lead of the Trust’s LGBTQ+ Network, our winner promotes learning and awareness by arranging free access to online CPD for clinical staff to address the barriers that minority groups face when accessing health care.

St John Ambulance Award – Jade Asson

Jade Asson is the District Lead for Staffordshire, Shropshire and Wolverhampton St John, as well as Warwickshire and Coventry. That’s quite a large patch to look after I’m sure you will agree!

Jade has played an integral part of the unit responder program, organising all of the training and ensuring a quality of service is at the highest standards.

This is all on top of being a senior nurse in a busy A and E department.

Being as busy as she is, I think we should be honoured that Jade Asson has managed to squeeze in time to attend tonight, but indeed she has, so give her a big round of applause as she comes to the front please.

St John Ambulance Award – Brad Pritchard and Lisa Humphreys

Brad Pritchard and Lisa Humphreys were at a unit meeting for Oswestry Unit Responders when they were assigned to an extremely difficult case, a paediatric cardiac arrest.

They arrived on scene quickly and began basic life support before quickly being backed up by an ambulance crew.

Brad and Lisa continued to assist, working as part of the overall team, providing care in a professional manner.

Incidents such as this are extremely traumatic, but they remained calm throughout, doing everything they could to assist, including Brad travelling in the ambulance as the child was taken to hospital.

Brad and Lisa did everything in their power that night to give the child the best chance of surviving, for which we ask them to come and join us at the front to collect their award.

Nick Freeman – Chief Officer’s Commendation

Nick Freeman has been a Community First Responder for ten years, initially starting in the Shrewsbury and Rae Valley scheme, before he moved to Telford where he became co-ordinator.

A recruitment drive took place earlier this year to attract new CFRs to join the ranks and keen to put all of his experience to good use, Nick quickly volunteered to assist with buddy shifts for newcomers, some of which were as far away as Worcester.

For not only helping many patients during the last ten years but also being prepared to assist newcomers, we ask Nick Freeman to come forwards and receive your commendation.

Jean Harris – Chief Officer’s Commendation (pictured below)

Jean Harris completed her training in 2013 and immediately threw herself into her duties as a Community First Responder in and around Nuneaton.

Completing more than her required hours every month, she soon became a familiar face to attending ambulance crews and always had a smile on her face.

Nothing was ever too much trouble for Jean who enjoyed helping people, supporting the local community with CPR training and raising funds for her scheme.

Unfortunately, Jean had to hang up her stethoscope earlier this year due to health reasons but tonight we have a chance to thank her for everything she has done with a Chief Officer’s Commendation.

Ash O’Malley – Chief Officer’s Commendation

Ash O’Malley began life as a CFR back in 2011 and is a scheme co-ordinator for Hereford.

In fact until a recent recruitment drive he was the only active CFR in his area, providing care to the local community as often as he could.

His commitment to Hereford has always seen him go above and beyond to help patients in their hour of need and following a boost to scheme numbers, he is now helping to guide new team members as they start their journey in community response.

Derek Chebsey – Community First Responder of the Year (pictured below)

This year’s winner joined FastAid Black Country in 2013 and ever since has always shown the highest degree of commitment to the role of the Community First Responder.

He is currently the Chairperson of the Charity and conducts this appointment with true professionalism, always going above and beyond to support the Trust and his Community.

A family man, he still finds time to mentor new members and acts as the co-ordinator for his scheme as well as holding a position on the Regional Forum, representing all CFR schemes operating in the Black Country.

Despite all the Lockdown restrictions, he continued with his voluntary role and responded to emergency cases on behalf of the Trust. However, we must also thank him for everything he did during Covid in his paid role as an NHS Nurse.

This year’s CFR Volunteer of the Year, who I should add prefers to be known as Dec, is Derek Chebsey.

Trust celebrates 999 day

Claire Brown – Wednesday 19th October 2022 – 1.00pm.

“No-one can be under any illusion about the scale of the challenge the NHS and our ambulance service staff, and volunteers have faced over the last two and half years, as we fought the appalling impact of COVID-19.  Never before have we faced such danger in carrying out our duty to serve and protect the people of the West Midlands.” – Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Marsh.

People across the region are coming together today to honour those who serve in the NHS and emergency services.

Emergency Services Day, also known as 999 Day, usually takes place annually on the 9th September but was postponed as a mark of respect following the sad passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Today’s rearranged Emergency Services Day is a Royal and Government backed national day and an opportunity for the country to pay tribute to the almost two million people who work and volunteer across the NHS and emergency services.

The event formally begins with 999 Day flags being raised across the UK at 9am to mark the 9th hour of the 9th day of the 9th month, followed by two minutes’ silence to remember the more than 7,500 members of the emergency services killed in the line of duty and the many more killed as a result of their service.

Lichfield Operations Manager, Mark Hayes, attended Staffordshire Police HQ earlier this morning to observe the flag raising on behalf of West Midlands Ambulance Service. He said: “While we are fortunate that we are the only ambulance service not to have lost staff to this cruel virus, many of my colleagues have suffered personal loss through the death of a loved one, making their journey to work, that little bit harder.

“There can be no doubt about the dedication of the staff of all three of our blue light services who day in day out, go about their jobs, often in very difficult circumstances; dedicating their professional lives to helping others – there can be no higher calling.”

Anthony Marsh Chief Executive Officer, continued: “Like my colleagues in Police and Fire Services, I want to thank each and every one of my staff and volunteers, no matter where you work, what role you play, for doing so much to help your colleagues, your patients and our community every single day.”

Tom Scholes-Fogg, Founder and Chief Executive of the 999 Day, said: “We all take the NHS and emergency services for granted. We know that when we really need help, it is there. Emergency Services Day is an opportunity for the country to say a huge heartfelt thank you to the 2 million people who put others before themselves. I encourage everybody to support our emergency services personnel all year round, not just on 999 Day.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called by the police at 1.03am (Thursday) reporting a collision involving a car and a wall at the junction of Powke Lane and Cox’s Lane, Rowley Regis. Three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car with two paramedics on board, HART paramedics, a MERIT trauma doctor and a critical care paramedic attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When the first ambulance resources arrived on scene within three minutes of the 999 call being made, they found a car which had collided with a wall. Three occupants were out of the vehicle and two were still inside.

“The driver, a man, was in a critical condition and receiving CPR by police colleagues. The team of ambulance staff quickly commenced advanced life support on the man. Lifesaving Bleed Control Kits Installed in Stoke-On-Trent

Shaunna Farley – Wednesday 12th October 2022 – 2pm.

Six lifesaving Bleed Control Kits have been installed in Stoke-on-Trent to provide vital aid to patients suffering with catastrophic bleeding before an ambulance crew arrives.

The kits contain a tourniquet and other trauma dressings and are vital to help save the lives of patients who suffer major trauma with catastrophic bleeding, whether caused by an accident or assault.

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) joined community group ‘Chit Chat 4 U’ last night (Tuesday) at Floral Hall in Tunstall Park to launch six Bleed Control Kits within the local area.

The Trust have provided six kits, funded by NHS Charities Together, which will go inside designated Bleed Control Kit cabinets which have been installed by Chit Chat 4 U who have fundraised for the provision of Bleed Control Kits in Stoke.

The kits have been placed at – Floral Hall, Victoria Park, Tunstall; Face of Stoke on Trent, the electrical substation building on Lichfield Street; Stoke Library, Church Street; Longton Town Hall, Times Square; Victoria Road, Fenton and Moorland Road, Burslem

A number of kits can already be found in parts of the region thanks to the hard work of The Daniel Baird Foundation, which was set up after the son of Lynne Baird was fatally stabbed in Birmingham in 2017. Working closely with the Foundation, WMAS helped develop the kits and now thanks to NHS Charities Together, more are being placed around the region.

Community Response Manager, Tim Cronin, who attended the launch event and demonstrated how the kits are used said: “Bleed Control Kits can be used by anyone, to stem major bleeding which can’t be stemmed by normal first aid measures. This can buy vital minutes until the ambulance arrives.

“Having these available in the community and accessible to the public will hopefully mean more lives can be saved. They can be accessed by calling 999 where the call assessor will direct you to the nearest bleed kit location and provide you with the access details.

“It’s great to support Chit Chat 4 U who do a fantastic job volunteering their time carrying out knife sweeps in the parks and fundraising for the provision of kits to try and help make Stoke a safer place.”

Larissa Cooke from Chit Chat 4 U said: ‘’Our group has worked incredibly hard to get the Bleed Control Kits into Stoke-on-Trent. Knowing we have succeeded and knowing we could potentially save someone’s life is just amazing.”

Cllr Abi Brown, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City council said: “These kits will help to save lives across the city, whether as a result of knife crime or accidental injury. I’d like to thank Chit Chat 4 U for working to bring these kits to Stoke-on-Trent as well as West Midlands Ambulance Service and NHS Charities Together for funding their purchase and installation.”

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams said: “These kits are a simple but clever idea which equips users with the equipment and instructions to potentially save a life.

“Chit Chat 4 U and West Midlands Ambulance Service have worked tirelessly to purchase these kits for the local community and I’m sure, if needed they will save lives.”

Ambulance Lifesavers Meet Baby Girl who Defied the Odds

Shaunna Farley – Tuesday 4th October 2022 – 10.30am.

A mother and daughter who beat all of the odds of survival have been reunited with the ambulance crews who helped save their lives.

Natasha Lyndon, her partner Chris and their 16-week old daughter, Adelaide from Solihull had an emotional reunion with the ambulance crews who came to their aid in June when Natasha started bleeding heavily at home.

Paramedic Richard Brennan and Technician Francesca Pinder from Erdington Hub together with paramedic Adil-Islam Choudhury and Technician Chloe Cooper from Hollymoor Hub attended the category 1 emergency, which is the highest priority call.

Chris said: “I was trying my best to remain calm for Tash and rang 999 immediately.  It was a huge relief when the ambulance arrived so quickly. They were so calm and reassuring at a critical time.”

Natasha said: “When the crews arrived in the middle of the night, I was losing blood profusely and didn’t know what was happening.”

Richard said: “When we arrived, we knew how serious Tash’s condition was and how quickly we would have to work. Our training instantly took over. We hoped for the best for Tash and Adelaide but we usually don’t find out any further information about patients once we hand them over at hospital.”

Francesca said: “At serious incidents like this, you really do go into autopilot and instantly act on your training to deliver the best possible care to the patient and ultimately, save the patient’s life.”

Natasha was conveyed to Heartlands Hospital due to a placental abruption where Adelaide was delivered by an emergency caesarean section 10-weeks premature and stayed on the neonatal ward for 61 days. Adelaide has since defied the odds set against her and is now breathing without oxygen support and is making progress each day.

Upon recovering in hospital, Natasha made it her mission to get in touch with West Midlands Ambulance Service to pass her thanks to the crews who helped her, which led to them being reunited at Warwickshire Ambulance Hub on Friday.

Speaking at the reunion with the family on Friday, Adil-Islam said: “It was wonderful and rewarding to see both mother and daughter doing so well after attending to Tash, who was in a terrible condition, big thumbs up to everyone that was involved in getting mother and daughter to the right place of care at the right time.”

Chloe said: “Adelaide is a miracle baby, we could have never imagined being able to see and hold her and see how much progress she has made.”

Francesca added: “With a job like this one, we really didn’t think the chances of a positive outcome were high. Even less did we think we’d be able to see Tash, Chris and Adelaide like this today. It’s so rewarding and such an honour.”

Natasha added: “If the crews had not been so quick thinking and efficient at getting us safely to hospital, Adelaide and myself would not be alive today. There are not enough words to say how grateful Chris and I are for their actions on that night.”

It was the greatest honour of my life

Murray MacGregor – Tuesday 20th September 2022 – 11.30am.

Like so many people across our nation, staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service bowed their heads at 11.55am yesterday morning to remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Staff at Bromsgrove, Dudley and Shrewsbury were among those who marked the moment.

For four though, it was a particularly special day as they represented the NHS ambulance services taking part in the parade ahead of Her Majesty’s coffin as it was taken from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Gate as part of the Civilian Services Contingent.

Mark Hayes (Lichfield), Jo Withington (Shrewsbury), Nikki Albutt (HQ) and Adam Aston (Sandwell) are all members of the Trust’s Ceremonial Unit and spent five days in London in preparation practicing their ceremonial drill in the middle of the night before taking their place as part of the State Funeral yesterday.

In addition to the four in the parade, Operations Manager Angela Hand (Bromsgrove) and Tactical Incident Commander Tim Atherton (HQ) were part of the large contingent of ambulance staff from across the country assisting London Ambulance Service given the millions of people who were in the capital for the funeral.

Angela and Tim centre with Nick and Kerry from London Ambulance Service

Earlier in the week, two members of the Hazardous Area Response Team, Ben Pallante and Anthony Kelham also went to London as part of the mutual aid being provided to the capital’s ambulance service.

Speaking about his time in the parade, Adam Aston, said: “It has been an incredible honour to represent the entire NHS Ambulance workforce as part of the at the State funeral.”

Jo Withington added: “I have been to the Festival of Remembrance before and am a Reservist as well, but these last few days and yesterday in particular, are without question, the greatest honour of my life.”

Mark Hayes said: “It was an absolute honour and privilege to represent not only WMAS but the NHS and pay our resects to Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II.  I know I speak for all four of us when I say we did the absolute best we could to provide a truly British send off to Her Royal Highness.”

Nikki Albutt added: “It was a phenomenal experience, so spectacular, yet so sombre; it is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.  We practiced for up to eight hours a day for six days, but nothing will beat the memories we all have.”

Lichfield paramedic to climb high for charity

Jamie Arrowsmith – Monday 5th September 2022 – 9:15am.

The only way is up for West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic Claire Jones as she prepares to climb the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world, Kilimanjaro.

As well as her paramedic role, Claire, who is based in Lichfield, volunteers for the Trust’s Staff Advice and Liaison Service, a peer support network within WMAS that provides signposting, advice and a listening ear to all members of staff. It is because of that role that Claire has decided to raise funds for The Ambulance Service Charity (TASC) when completing her trek up Kilimanjaro, for which she flies out on Friday.

TASC provides a range of services to support the mental health, physical rehabilitation and financial wellbeing of the UK’s ambulance staff, and is a charity close to Claire’s heart.

“I am hugely passionate about supporting ambulance staff with their health and wellbeing and if I can complete what will be the most challenging event I have ever done in my whole life for my colleagues, I will be very happy!”

Ahead of the 5,895m climb, Claire has been training hard, bracing herself for altitude sickness and temperatures ranging from 30 degrees at the bottom to -27 degrees during the night as she nears the mountain’s ecological zones to the summit.

Claire added: “This will be the hardest trek I have ever attempted, and I am extremely motivated to raise as much money as I can to fund as many counselling support sessions as I can for TASC.”

To help raise as much money as possible, Claire is fully funding the trek herself, so all sponsorship money raised will go directly towards the fund-raising pot and towards supporting her colleagues. If you would like to sponsor Claire or read more about her charity challenge, please click here.

New dad has bike stolen while saving lives

Murray MacGregor – Tuesday 30th August 2022 – 4.50pm.

A student paramedic who has just become a father for the third time has had the bike that he gets to work on, and which holds great sentimental value, stolen from Stoke Ambulance Hub.

The thieves entered the Hub, broke the lock on the bike and then rode off as an ambulance left the hub.

The incident happened at around 4.50pm on Bank Holiday Monday as Liam Ticehurst was out responding to patients on an emergency ambulance.

Looking at the CCTV, the thieves had clearly planned the theft as they went straight for the bike, a Merida Reacto 5000, which has an Ultegra group set, disk breaks and Fulcrum wheels with 25mm tyres and is worth around £2,500.

Senior Operations Manager, Nic Gunn, said: “The thieves were clearly targeting the bike as they went straight to it.  They were spotted by a member of staff who gave chase, but they cycled down Forge Lane, down onto the canal and were last seen near the Royal Mail depot.  They were wearing hoodies and had surgical masks on to cover their identity.

“I’d appeal for anyone who was driving in the area at the time and might have dash cam footage that would be useful to please contact Staffordshire Police.

“It does beggar belief that someone would stoop so low.  Stoke Hub is clearly an ambulance station, and everyone knows what our staff do and how hard they work to try and save lives, yet these people repay that hard work by stealing Liam’s bike.  It couldn’t have come at a worse time for him and his partner too.”

Liam added: “I use the bike to ride in from Leek for each shift to save a bit of cash given the rising cost of living and the arrival of my new baby daughter, who was born at the end of July.

“The bike also holds real sentimental value to me as I bought it from money left to me by my grandmother, who passed away suddenly a couple of years ago.  As a keen cyclist, I think my nan would have liked the idea of me getting the bike and especially how I was using it to get to work.  It really is devastating that both the bike and the link to my nan have gone.”

Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of the bike or knows who might have been involved in its theft is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 stating Log 540 of the 29thAugust.  The bike serial number is WC8201099R.

What an amazing 11 days!

Murray MacGregor – Tuesday 9th August 2022 – 12.10pm.

And with one final roar from Birmingham’s Raging Bull, it was all over, but what an amazing 11 days it has been.

A spectacular closing ceremony at the Alexander Stadium brought the curtain down on Birmingham 2022, the 22nd Commonwealth Games.  It was the biggest ever with around 1.5 million spectators, getting to see some spectacular sport.

For West Midlands Ambulance Service, it was the biggest sporting event that we have ever had to provide medical cover for, working with the medical teams put in place by the Organising Committee.

In total, we scheduled over 23,000 hours of ambulance time including 1,766 shifts made up of 770 on ambulances and 226 commander shifts. They were supported by 160 shifts in our control room, 60 vehicle preparation operative shifts preparing up to 60 ambulances and 27 cars each day and 40 shifts in the National Ambulance Resilience Unit.

For the ambulance service, we were only called on to help 166 patients of which just 83 were taken to hospital.

Trust Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh, said: “This has been a hugely successful event that has placed Birmingham and the wider West Midlands in the spotlight for all of the right reasons.  My congratulations to the Organising Committee for putting on such a well run event.

“I want to pay tribute to the hundreds of staff who gave up their time off with their families to come and work during the Games.  You have done an amazing job helping to keep the huge crowds safe.

“I am immensely proud of everything you have done to show what a wonderful city Birmingham is and indeed the wider West Midlands and what it has to offer.

“You have interacted with the public and the Games family on a daily basis and shown what a fantastic career the ambulance service has to offer and for that I am immensely grateful.”

A gallery of pictures taken by staff at the Games can be found at https://wmas.nhs.uk/birmingham-2022/

Head of Emergency Planning and Commonwealth Games Lead for the Trust, James Williams, added: “What an incredible couple of weeks it’s been for the region. I want to say a huge ‘thank you’, to everyone in the Trust who has been involved for making the Games as successful as it has been.  It’s been wonderful to see the whole Trust getting behind the event and helping colleagues out wherever they can.

“It’s been a real morale booster for staff, not just the crews out at venues but all the backroom staff as well.  Can I also say thank you to the planning team – we started this journey as soon as Birmingham was awarded the Games in December 2017 and that really stepped up a gear in early 2021.  It has been quite a journey but so worth it.  All that effort has delivered a magnificent event, one which we can all be proud of.”
