When you dial 999 and ask for the ambulance service you may not be aware of the infrastructure that goes on behind the scenes in order for us to provide this service in the West Midlands area.

Your call will be taken by our call centre staff, and you may receive care from our front line emergency team but those front-line people are backed up a whole army of other key staff e.g. non-emergency drivers, clinical staff, and first aid trainers who work directly with the public, maintenance technicians, logistics experts, and office staff & management who support WMAS behind the scenes. Our teams, working together, are pivotal in enabling us to provide a first class health service.

West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust offers a range of services. The most obvious one is our 999 emergency service, however, we also offer the services shown below:


Community First Responders

Community First Responders are teams of volunteers who are trained by West Midlands Ambulance Service to a nationally recognised level and provide lifesaving treatment to people in their local communities. Community First Responders (CFRs) are always backed up with the nearest available emergency vehicle.

Patient Transport Services

As well as dealing with ‘999’ emergency calls, West Midlands Ambulance Service plays a key role in getting thousands of patients to their out-patient appointments. Every year, our staff complete in the region of one million non-emergency Patient Transport Service (PTS) journeys.

Clinical research is a vital part of the work of the NHS, helping improve treatments for patients now and in the future. Clinical trials play an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure we use existing treatments in the best way possible.
